Alabama A&M hosting Alabama in first-ever home women’s game versus SEC opponent

HUNTSVILLE — In a historic event for the Alabama A&M women’s basketball team, the Lady Bulldogs host No. 24 Alabama today – the first-ever appearance by an SEC women’s basketball team on The Hill.

The game is the second of a doubleheader at A&M. The Bulldogs men’s basketball team host Oakwood University at 5:30 in their season opener.

The Bulldogs usher in a new era, bringing in head coach Dawn Thornton to the helm of the women’s basketball program. She brings in 12 transfer players, including Shelomi Sanders of the University of Colorado, Lauryn Pendleton of Arkansas State and SWAC Preseason All-SWAC First Team honoree, Coriah Beck.

The Maroon and White return Darian BurginLaCambria Shakespeare and SWAC Defensive Player of the Year, Alisha Wilson.

The men’s team has a busy slate during the opening month of the season, with seven of its nine games at home. The Bulldogs host Arkansas Baptist on Monday and Fisk next Wednesday, before going on the road for back-to-back games for the only time in the first month.

“We love playing in front of our home fans,” Alabama A&M head coach Otis Hughley Jr. said. “We want to pack the house and we’ve got a lot of exciting basketball at home to begin the season.”
