ALDOT opens bids for Fort Payne, Boaz, Sheffield, Scottsboro road projects

FORT PAYNE — Wiregrass Construction submitted the apparent low bid for a key highway project in Fort Payne, the Alabama Department of Transportation announced.

The bid was one of several opened for projects in North Alabama.

In Fort Payne, the project will help improve operations on Alabama Highway 35 near I-59. Of three bidders, Wiregrass Construction’s low bid was $4,997,900.

The project features improvements to increase the functionality of the Highway 35 intersections with Jordan Road/Airport Road, the I-59 interchange ramps at Exit 218, and Briarwood Avenue.

Planned improvements include signal upgrades, construction of auxiliary lanes on SR-35 northbound from I-59 southbound to Medical Center Drive and Highway 35 southbound from west of Jordan Road to I-59 southbound, and addition of a right turn lane from Highway 35 northbound to I-59 northbound.

Construction is pending bid review and award of the contract. Additionally, work will follow a specified period for procurement of materials such as signal poles. ALDOT anticipates work starting in early 2026.

Other projects in ALDOT”s June letting included:

  • Resurfacing 3.8 miles of Highway 79 in Jackson County from Highway 35 west of Scottsboro to County Road 145 received two bids. Rogers Group submitted the apparent low bid of $1,123,350.
  • Constructing the lane reconfiguration on Highway 168 from Darnell Street to U.S. 431 in Boaz received three bids. Vulcan Materials, Asphalt and Construction submitted the apparent low bid of $1,037,672.
  • Adding a center turn lane, widening, and resurfacing on Second Street from Glendale Avenue to Sheffield Avenue east of Sheffield received three bids. MLMD submitted the apparent low bid of $1,322,735. The Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvements Program-II will fund this project.
  • Constructing acceleration and turn lane extensions and installing traffic signals on U.S. 431 at Green Valley Road received two bids. Gillespie Construction submitted the apparent low bid of $1,087,319. ATRIP-II will fund this project.
