Arts Huntsville Gallery celebrates Panoply poster artists

HUNTSVILLE — Visitors to the Arts Huntsville Gallery at the Von Braun Center will find a “panoply” of artwork on display through April, celebrating more than 40 years of Huntsville’s longest running arts festival.

The exhibit is adjacent to the Arts Huntsville office between the VBC Playhouse and the Concert Hall.

“The Art of Panoply: Posters and More” exhibit features the work of local artists who were selected as a poster artist for Panoply over the past 30 years.

Arts Huntsville installed the exhibit as a prelude to the Panoply Arts Festival in Big Spring Park on April 28-30, presented by Mazda Toyota Manufacturing.

“Selecting a local artist for the festival’s posters and t-shirts each year is a decades-long tradition,” said Arts Huntsville Executive Director Allison Dillon-Jauken. “After celebrating our 40th festival in 2022, it felt appropriate for 2023 to collectively display the work of some of these artists.

“We hope the public will enjoy experiencing this Panoply tradition as a singular gallery experience.”

The exhibit features original work displayed next to framed prints of each artist’s Panoply poster.

The collection spans 30 years, starting with Maggie Little, the earliest exhibiting artist dating to 1992. More than a dozen other Panoply poster artists are featured through Sonya Clemmons’ design in 2022.

“The exhibit has been curated with a combination of work on loan from the artists as well as from Arts Huntsville’s private collection,” said exhibit curator and Public Art Program Manager Jennifer Johnson. “Visitors to this exhibit will be treated to diverse original work by the artists, and in a few cases will enjoy Panoply poster originals.”

The exhibit features a variety of media including painting, textiles, drawing, and mixed media.

Along with Little and Clemmons, exhibiting artists include Rickie Higgins, Mary “Pat” Flynn Kyser, Leslie Lockhart, Jahni Moore, Yuri Ozaki, Gina Percifull, Renee Prasil, Logan Tanner, Chris Wade, Christina Wegman, and Grace Wever.

The undisclosed poster artist for 2023 will have artwork added to the exhibit after the poster art is unveiled in March.
