ATHENS – On Dec. 28, downtown Athens faced a significant challenge as an EF-1 tornado swept through the area, leaving damage and uncertainty.
Several downtown merchants, restaurants, and public gathering spaces received substantial damage.

In response to inquiries from the public, business owners, and public agencies, Athens Main Street established two critical relief funds: the Business Storm Relief Fund, aimed at helping affected local businesses, and the Courthouse Grounds Restoration Fund, focused on restoring the historic courthouse lawn.
“We’re incredibly thankful to everyone who contributed to these relief efforts,” said Athens Main Street Executive Director Tere Richardson. “These funds are a meaningful step toward helping our downtown recover and thrive again.”
Four businesses will share $21,250 from the Business Storm Relief Fund to help alleviate the sigificant business disruptions they faced from the storm.

CEI Bookstore and Bennett’s Clothing each received $10,000; Southern Throne Boutique received $1,000; and Broken Brush Art Studio was a $250 recipient.
While many businesses endured damage, the priority for funding was given to those forced to close for extended periods – businesses that not only faced repair costs but also lost income due to interrupted operations.
Eligibility requirements included:
- Location within the Athens Main Street district
- Proof of substantial business interruption from the December 28 tornado
- A valid business license
Athens Main Street received four applications and awarded funds to all four eligible applicants. The Athens Main Street Board reviewed each application and allocated funds proportionally based on the extent of loss.

Athens Main Street thanked Pepper Johnstone & Company; Mauldin & Jenkins, CPAs & Advisors; TBAKI; Valentina’s Pizzeria and Wine Bar; Splash of Ink Screenprinting Embroidery & Design; and numerous individuals who contributed to the storm relief fund.
An update regarding the Courthouse Grounds Restoration Fund will be released soon, the organization said. Athens Main Street said it has developed a conceptual design for the courthouse lawn and is currently reviewing it with key stakeholders.
“The community can expect a thoughtful and impactful plan that honors the space’s significance and supports its role as a gathering place for years to come,” the news release said.
