ATHENS — Full hearts helped make full tummies in Limestone County.

The Athens Rotary Club, friends from the Birdie Thornton Center and seniors from the Athens Activity Center organized and filled more than 1,100 individual meal bags for Limestone County Schools students.

As part of Athens Rotary Club’s marquee service project, the Full Tummy Project works with school administrators to feed students who have been identified by school counselors as food insecure.

The kids receive a bag of food for the weekend to bridge the gap for those kids who may depend on school lunches as their primary meal for the week.

The bags contain ravioli, granola bars, oatmeal, mac and cheese, crackers, and applesauce.

The meals were delivered to the schools today. Hometown Grocery of Athens ordered and organized the groceries for delivery.

Funding for the Full Tummy Project comes from a Rotary International grant, the Athens Rotary Club, and the Athens Limestone Empty Bowls project.
