Athens State University has been named a 2025-26 College of Distinction, a national designation recognizing institutions for their commitment to engaged and experiential undergraduate education.

The honor is awarded by Colleges of Distinction, an organization that evaluates schools based on what it calls its “Four Distinctions” criteria: Engaged Students, Great Teaching, Vibrant Community and Successful Outcomes. The selection process includes research and interviews and focuses on educational impact rather than traditional ranking metrics.

“This recognition as a College of Distinction reflects the spirit of who we are at Athens State University,” said Dr. Catherine Wehlburg, president of Athens State. “We believe education should be transformative, an experience that not only expands knowledge, but shapes confidence, purpose and possibility. This honor celebrates not only our institution, but the determination, curiosity and resilience of our students, our faculty and staff.”

Tyson Schritter, chief operating officer at Colleges of Distinction, said Athens State stood out for its campus culture and student-centered approach.

“Athens State University has crafted a campus culture where students are empowered to take ownership of their learning,” Schritter said. “Its programs reflect the kind of innovation and intentionality that prepare students for life after graduation.”

According to Colleges of Distinction, recognized institutions emphasize high-impact practices such as first-year seminars, collaborative projects, undergraduate research, global learning and internships, along with personalized student support.

“We’ve never believed in ranking schools,” Schritter said. “Our goal is to celebrate institutions that help students find their place, their purpose and their potential. Athens State stands out for creating an environment where students thrive not just academically, but as whole people.”

In addition to the overall designation, Athens State was recognized as a 2025-26 Business College of Distinction and a 2025-26 Education College of Distinction. The university also received the organization’s 2025-26 Career Development badge.

The Business College of Distinction award recognizes undergraduate business programs that combine classroom instruction with real-world application. The Education College of Distinction award highlights programs that prepare classroom-ready teachers. The Career Development badge reflects a demonstrated commitment to helping students transition from college to meaningful careers.

Founded in 1822, Athens State is Alabama’s oldest institution of higher education. The university operates as an upper division institution, serving transfer students and those with more than 36 credit hours who are completing their bachelor’s degrees. Athens State offers more than 50 undergraduate degree programs as well as graduate options.
