DECATUR — The two campuses are separated by just a few miles, but there was a world of distance for some students to transfer credits from one to the other.

Now, thanks to a memorandum of understanding, Calhoun Community College students can easier apply credits toward bachelor’s programs at Athens State University.

The presidents of Calhoun and Athens State recently signed the agreement to facilitate educational opportunities and streamline credit transfers for students between the two institutions.

According to Dr. Catherine M. Wehlburg, Athens State University president, the MOU aims to encourage students to complete their associate degrees at Calhoun and seamlessly transfer their credits to Athens State to enhance their academic and career prospects.

“This initiative demonstrates the strong commitment of both institutions to providing flexible and accessible pathways to higher education,” she said.

Dr. Jimmy Hodges, president of Calhoun Community College said, “This agreement is a significant step forward in supporting our students’ educational journeys. By collaborating with Athens State University, we are ensuring that our students can maximize their prior learning and achieve their academic goals more efficiently.

“We are proud to work together to provide such valuable opportunities for our community.”

According to the agreement, student requirements are:

  • A minimum of 36 earned transferable semester hours from institutions accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
  • A minimum cumulative transfer GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • At least 15 hours applicable to general education requirements.
  • Eligibility to return to previously attended colleges or universities.

Additionally, students can apply up to 64 semester hours of non-traditional/non-graded college credit towards a bachelor’s degree.
