Calhoun nursing program surpasses state, national averages

DECATUR — The Calhoun Community College Registered Nursing and Licensed Practical Nursing graduates once again outpace state and national passage rates. Alabama Board of Nursing NCLEX scores reveal that Calhoun’s RN and LPN nursing programs outpace state and national averages.

The college’s RN program saw a 13-point increase over last year’s rate, currently boasting a 95% graduate pass rate, while the LPN pass rate holds steady at 98.25%, the school announced in a news release.

“Words cannot describe how proud I am of our students and their continued dedication and perseverance to their studies in our drastically changing world,” said Dr. Lynn Hogan, Calhoun Nursing Department chair. “The students who achieved this pass rate in 2022 were directly impacted with the continually changing COVID restrictions, which affected their learning environment.

“And for them to pull off scores of 95% and above, is beyond outstanding in my personal opinion.”

Students attend classes in the Health Sciences Center on the Decatur or Huntsville campuses approximately three days per week for up to six hours per day. That time is used for nursing lectures and to develop their skills and proficiencies in the on-campus nursing laboratory.

“In addition to on-campus classes, clinical education takes place at one of our partner health care facilities each semester. The required number of clinical hours varies with each course” said Hogan. “With Calhoun being one of the top-ranking nursing programs in the state, I am so thankful for the continued support of the college as it is this village of champions that allows us to not only thrive, but grow in our role as nursing educators and provide the highest quality program to the community.”

For anyone interested in the nursing programs, Calhoun’s Decatur campus is hosting an information next month. It will be March 1 from 4-5 p.m. in Room 109 of the Health Sciences Building.

“A first-attempt credentialing exam pass rate of 95% and higher is a very big deal,” said Dr. Jimmy Hodges, Calhoun president. “This speaks volumes to the expertise and knowledge our instructors have with ensuring our programs include curriculum and training that is currently being used and practiced in many healthcare facilities.
