TANNER – The Calhoun Community College advanced manufacturing team plans to make some chips fly tonight – and on a national streaming broadcast.
The team is competing for $100,000 and the 2023 Project MFG National Championship on the YouTube series “Clash of Trades.” The competition is at 7 p.m.
“We are beyond proud that our team has made it yet again to the Project MFG National Championship,” said Tad Montgomery, Calhoun machine tool instructor. “Our students go through rigorous advanced manufacturing training using some of the most up-to-date equipment in this industry, and we wholeheartedly feel that it helps prepare them for competitions such as these.
“They have been studying and practicing non-stop as being named national champs is their ultimate goal, with the $100,00 prize being the cherry on top.”
The four-member Calhoun team will be competing against student manufacturing teams from across the nation. Tonight’s episode also features Minnesota State College Southeast, Southwestern Illinois College, and Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology.
The episode is part of a third season focused on real-world medical manufacturing scenarios. During the competition, students will be tested and judged on their skills and expertise in the medical manufacturing field.

According to Bill Ross, president of Project MFG, the national championship showcases not only the skillset of students from across the nation, but provides a front-row seat to the nation’s top four teams competing under extreme pressure as if they were working in a real-world scenario.
“We are excited to use this platform as an opportunity to help increase awareness of the crucial role manufacturing plays in our economy, as well as to demonstrate the potential for a lucrative and in-demand career that the manufacturing industry has to offer,” he said.
