ATHENS – In recognition of National Safe Digging Month in April, Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks has declared April as the city’s Safe Digging Month.
At Monday’s City Council meeting, Marks delivered a proclamation to Braxton Guinn, the director of Athens Gas Services Department, and Assistant Director Paul King.

“The safety and well being of our citizens is of utmost importance to the city of Athens and the Athens Gas Department,” Marks said. “We remain committed to promoting awareness and education of safe digging practices among homeowners, contractors and excavators.
“By working together, we can reduce the risks associated with digging and other excavation activities to create a safer environment for all of our citizens.”
The proclamation detailed the importance of safe digging practices – such as contacting Alabama 811 before any kinds of excavation activities – to prevent property damage, personal injury and even loss of life.
“This proclamation is not only important for our gas department, but for all of Athens Utilities,” Guinn said. “If they can call that number (811) before they do any kind of digging, like putting in a tree or even a mailbox, then they can save themselves from a lot of possible trouble down the road.”
King echoed the sentiments of Guinn, noting just how often they are called out to dig sites after the damage has already been done.
“It happens on a weekly basis for us,” King said. “Even when people try to pull out an old tree stump, they could pull service lines up with it. That’s why it’s so important to call 811 before digging.”
To further promote those safe digging practices, the Athens Gas Department has launched a public safety awareness survey – which was included in this month’s utility bill to all Limestone County residents. The survey can also be found online at https://athensgasdepartment.
Residents who complete the survey and return it to the Gas Department before the May 30 deadline will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a $1,500 cash prize.
