HUNTSVILLE — Madison and Limestone counties are the top growing counties in the state, according to estimates released today by the U.S. Census Bureau. The figures are from July 1, 2022 to July 1, 2023.
Madison County picked up nearly 9,000 new residents and moved ahead of Mobile County to become the second most-populous county in the state. This is the first time the Port City trailed the Rocket City since before the Civil War.
Madison County now stands at 412,600 – 960 more than Mobile County.
Meanwhile, Limestone County is the fastest growing state, percentagewise, with an increase of 10.7%, for a total of 114,654 residents.
Marshall County joined the 100,000-plus club when its population jumped from 99,428 to 100,756.
The top five counties are Jefferson – 662,585; Madison – 412,600; Mobile – 411,640; Montgomery – 253,507; and Tuscaloosa – 237,723.
In North Alabama, every county but two – Franklin and Winston – gained population. The counties and their populations are:
- Colbert: 2023 – 58,361; 2022 – 57,993
- Cullman: 2023 – 92,016; 2022, 90,663
- DeKalb: 2023 – 72,569; 2022 – 72,082
- Franklin: 2023 – 31,802; 2022 – 31,910
- Jackson: 2023 – 53,467; 2022 – 52,923
- Lauderdale: 2023 – 96,814; 2022 – 95,875
- Lawrence: 2023 – 33,502; 2022 – 33,187
- Limestone: 2023 – 114,654; 2022 – 110,868
- Madison: 2023 – 412,600; 2022 – 403,605
- Marshall: 2023 – 100,756; 2022 – 99,428
- Morgan: 2023 – 125,133; 2022 – 124,133
- Winston: 2023 – 23,611; 2022 – 23,741.
