HUNTSVILLE — A project that has been years in the making will mark a major milestone today.
Phase one of Huntsville’s long-planned and much-needed Northern Bypass has been completed and, to mark the occasion, U.S. Rep. Dale Strong will join Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle, Huntsville Director of Urban and Economic Development Shane Davis and other local officials and community leaders in a grand opening ceremony this morning.
Strong (R-Huntsville), a member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development, secured $8.3 million in community project funding for the project, which includes a 10-mile limited access highway between Interstate 565 and Memorial Parkway.
Once completed, the bypass will ease traffic congestion, improve mobility, and strengthen Huntsville’s regional transportation network.
The project is being completed in two phases.
- Phase One: The new intersection at North Memorial Parkway/U.S. 231 and Bob Wade Lane was finished ahead of schedule as a result of the funding.
- Phase Two: Also supported by the $8.3 million, Phase Two is expected to be completed in late 2026. Beyond relieving traffic congestion, the bypass will enhance infrastructure, open new economic opportunities, and support continued growth across the Huntsville region.
The area is already seeing new projects with Food City, which will anchor the Gateway Commons development. New residential projects are also in plans along with future objectives to continue State Highway 255 on the east side of Memorial Parkway.
“Our efforts will identify the highest and best uses for this area to include new residential and retail projects,” said Davis. “In addition, we are very much interested in the opportunity to develop an area that could be used for a new commercial/industrial park.
“With all the recent industrial projects that have been achieved over the past five to six years, the city and Madison County are in need of new industrial sites for future job creation.”
