TUSCUMBIA – A night of music honoring a legend is set for May 4 as Colbert County Tourism & Convention Bureau presents the Earl “Peanutt” Montgomery Tribute Concert at the Ritz Theatre in Sheffield.
Montgomery, a 2023 Alabama Music Hall of Fame inductee, is one of the most prolific musicians and songwriters to emerge from the Shoals. Featured artists paying tribute to him will include Darryl Worley, Georgette Jones (yes, Tammy and George’s daughter), Lenny LeBlanc, Bradley Walker, and Mark “Muleman” Massey, with Billy Lawson & Wishbone.
“We’re thrilled to have such top-notch talent at The Ritz to celebrate this legendary songwriter,” said Christi Britten, executive director of the Tennessee Valley Museum of Art. “We’re preparing for a capital campaign to renovate this nearly century-old venue, and this high-profile concert allows us to share the beauty and potential of the historic Ritz Theatre with music lovers from across the region.”
Montgomery is a master of his craft who began playing guitar at a young age and developed a passion for songwriting. He began his career as the lead guitarist at Fame Studios and played with artists such as Bob Dylan, Etta James and Patsy Cline.
Over the course of his career, he has written hits for George Jones, Dolly Parton, and Tammy Wynette, including “Loving You Could Never Be Better,” “We’re Gonna Hold On,” and “What’s Your Mama’s Name.”
Barbara Mandrell, Tanya Tucker, and Merle Haggard have also recorded his songs. Montgomery’s versatility as a musician and songwriter allowed him to collaborate with artists across a wide range of styles and helped shape the sound of the Muscle Shoals music scene.
“We’re thrilled to host the Peanutt Montgomery Tribute Concert, which honors the legacy of one of Muscle Shoals’ greatest songwriters,” said Susann Hamlin, Colbert County Tourism president & CEO. “It’s an opportunity to celebrate the unique cultural heritage of our region, and we’re excited to showcase some of the best talents in the industry.”
This event, which starts at 7 p.m., was made possible in part by a grant from the Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area, which recognizes the region’s rich musical history.
