Cullman County awarded grant to repair link to interstate

MONTGOMERY — An emergency need to repair a heavily traveled road in Cullman County has prompted Gov. Kay Ivey to award a $300,000 grant to the county.

The county will use the Community Development Block Grant funds for repairs of a partial road collapse on Cullman County Road 222, which links with Interstate 65. Several large industries are located on the road, which serves as a main artery into the city of Cullman.

“Cullman County leaders are to be commended for their understanding of this public safety concern and their promptness in providing a temporary solution while working toward a long-term fix,” Ivey said. “I am pleased to assist with this project that will mean a safer road for those who travel it.”

Cullman County road crews attributed the sinkhole to a collapsed 70-year-old pipe that runs under the road. Officials have been able to stabilize the road temporarily and reopen it to traffic, but they must replace the pipe under the road to provide a long-term remedy.

Much of the road was recently restructured and resurfaced through CDBG and other funds to ensure it holds up to heavy vehicles traveling to and from the local industries.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

“This project will further fortify this heavily traveled road and make it safe for the traveling public,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “ADECA is pleased to be a partner in this project to ensure public safety for the many motorists who travel this road.”

Ivey notified Jeff Clemons, chairman of the Cullman County Commission, that the grant had been approved. Grant funds will be used to purchase needed materials for the repair while the county will perform the work.
