Decatur’s Jeff Denard praised by Trump during address to Congress

WASHINGTON — Jeff Denard isn’t one who seeks the spotlight.

Praised by his employer for his humility and selflessness, the volunteer firefighter from Decatur was in the spotlight Tuesday thanks to none other than the first lady and the president of the United States.

“Here today is a proud American steelworker and fantastic person from Decatur, Alabama,” said President Trump during his address to a joint session of Congress. “Jeff Denard has been working at the same steel plant for 27 years in a job that has allowed him to serve as the captain of his local volunteer fire department. Raised seven children with his beautiful wife, Nicole, and over the years, provided a loving home for more than 40 foster children.

“Thank you, Jeff.”

Invited by First Lady Melania Trump, Denard has worked for Nucor Steel for more than 20 years, raised seven children, led his local volunteer fire department, and also opened a youth home in Danville.

Prior to the address, Denard spoke about his employer, Nucor Steel, and the children he and his wife foster.

“I work for Nucor Steel. Been there about 25 years,” said Denard. “Amazing company. The culture is amazing. Could not do the things that I do without Nucor Steel. I’ve also been with the fire department in our local area for about 27 years. Served as a captain there.

“My wife and I also are ranch managers of the Circle Ranch out in Danville. We have about 38 children on site. We have been fostering now for about three years and have had about 41 children through our home.

“We are so blessed. God’s been so good to us that we’re able to do this. The things that President Trump has done to make Nucor successful it’s definitely been an honor for my family and me.”

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey praised Denard for having a “servant’s heart” shortly after the speech.

“What an incredible moment for a fellow Alabamian, Jeff Denard, when he was recognized by President Trump in front of a joint session of Congress! Jeff represents everything Alabama stands for,” said Ivey. “He is hardworking. He is a loving father. I am grateful to the president for highlighting this great Alabamian and reminding the country how blessed we are to call the United States home.”

Nucor lauded Denard’s humility and dedication in his employee description on the company’s website.

“Jeff approaches every task with humility and dedication, consistently giving his best to everyone,” the company said. “His time with Nucor spans over two decades, during which he has selflessly served the company and his community in many ways. Evident through his involvement as manager at the Circle Ranch, leader of the rescue team, and as a local firefighter, Jeff is a shining example of what it means to Live Our Culture.”
