A former Cullman County attorney has been indicted on multiple felony charges tied to allegations that she attempted to poison her husband with fentanyl, according to court documents.
Sara Baker faces charges including conspiracy to commit murder, three counts of attempted murder, second-degree domestic violence, second-degree elder abuse, unlawful distribution of a controlled substance and four counts of solicitation to commit a controlled substance crime, according to court records.
Prosecutors allege Baker attempted to poison her husband, James Doyle Baker, by placing fentanyl in his food or drink during several incidents in September 2025. Court documents state the alleged attempts occurred on Sept. 4, Sept. 12 and Sept. 20, 2025, at a residence in Cullman County.
The indictment also alleges Baker conspired with another person between Sept. 1 and Nov. 25, 2025 to obtain fentanyl with the intent of causing her husband’s death.
Additional charges stem from allegations that fentanyl was administered without the victim’s consent, causing physical impairment, which prosecutors say supports the domestic violence and elder abuse counts.
Baker was arrested in November 2025 and later posted a $400,000 bond on Nov. 26.
Local reports claim Baker previously worked as an attorney in Cullman County and at one time served in the Cullman County District Attorney’s Office. The Alabama State Bar suspended Baker in December 2025 following the allegations.
Court records cited in the report also indicate an Alabama Supreme Court justice appointed a Walker County judge to the case, with Judge Jamie Sumerel temporarily assigned to preside over proceedings.
In addition, records show that a witness listed in the case is also one of Baker’s former clients. Baker’s legal team has requested a preliminary hearing.
