Friday after Five returns to downtown Athens

ATHENS — It is a testament to two popular sayings – “Thank God it’s Friday” and “It must be 5 o’clock somewhere” – Athens Main Street welcomes the first “Friday After Five” event of the year this week.

Food trucks, shopping and dining are all on the docket with downtown merchants open to go along with plenty of outdoor fun in the Square Arts & Entertainment District.

Bring a lawn chair and enjoy live music on the eastside of the Limestone County Courthouse from Huntsville’s party band Juice from 5-8:30 p.m.

“This event brings patrons from the entire North Alabama region to support our merchants,” said Athens Main Street Executive Director Tere Richardson. “This staple event will have people dancing in the street enjoying the atmosphere of a historic downtown Athens.”

Food trucks include Ramona J’s, Touchdown Wings, New South Hotdog, Hattie Mae’s, Get Loaded, Sandman Sandmaches, Southern Wagyu, Tacos To Go, Old Havana Café, Taste of Maine, Happi Pappi, Rita’s Italian Ice, Snobiz, and Granny B’s Sweet Treats.

New this year are children’s activities. This month, children can meet public safety officials and first responders on the southside of the Limestone County Courthouse.

Sara Ogles, owner of That’s SO Art, said as a small downtown business owner, she is grateful to Athens Main Street for bringing events such Friday after Five to downtown Athens.

“The Athens Main Street events bring in more people to my little shop than regular shopping hours, some even traveling in from Decatur or Huntsville just to see what Athens is all about,” she said.
