DECATUR – Hold onto your helmets and get ready for a day of exhilarating, side-splitting, gravity-powered fun.
Decatur is hosting the inaugural Derby Down Bank soapbox race, guaranteed to be an awesome, goofy day for the whole family.
Spectators are welcome to witness this event as competitors race against the clock for the fastest time down the course.
“We’re beyond excited to bring this unique and hilarious event to Decatur,” said organizer Casey Hughes. “The Derby Down Bank is all about community, laughter, and bringing life back to Bank Street Downtown. Decatur has so much potential for amazing events and we can’t wait to see its newest event in action.
“It’s going to be a must-see spectacle followed by an unforgettable party.”
On Saturday, June 21st, starting at 10 a.m. the Historic Bank Street of Decatur will transform into a daring downhill raceway as homemade soapbox cars, decked out in the wildest and most creative designs imaginable, go head-to-head for glory, bragging rights, and the coveted title of “erby Down Bank Champion.
We’re talking pure imagination on wheels – expect the unexpected, from lightning-fast speed machines to hilariously zany contraptions that might just (barely) make it to the finish line. Derby Down Bank will also offer a variety of vendors, music, and activities for the entire family.
But the fun doesn’t stop when the last car crosses the finish line.
Directly following the checkered flag, the celebration moves to The Banksy for an awesome after-party. And the excitement keeps rolling with a post-event concert by Bishop Black and El Duderino at 6 p.m.
All proceeds from the concert will benefit the Johnny Sandlin Foundation for Music and the Arts.
Want to keep the party going? It’s easy. Snag an official “Derby Down Bank” t-shirt, and that’s your golden ticket to free admission for the after-party and concert at The Banksy. Concert T-shirts are $25. These official concert-entry t-shirts will also be sold on-site during the Derby Down Bank event, while supplies last.
