HUNTSVILLE — Girls Inc. of Huntsville has received a $10,000 grant from Collins Aerospace to expand access to STEM education.
The gift will help fund the Invest in a Girl Initiative, a part of Girls Inc.’s summer camp programming and its 50th anniversary Fuel Her Fire Campaign.
The grant also helps Girls Inc. fund the Fuel Her Fire Sneaker Gala in October. A famous athlete, whose name will be announced this fall, will be on hand to support the goal of the Fuel Her Fire Campaign, which is to serve an additional 3,000 girls across North Alabama.
“The Fuel Her Fire Campaign, which celebrates our 50th year serving Huntsville, is changing lives on a daily basis,” said Stephanie Malone, executive director of Girls Inc. of Huntsville. “Our current and future girls are getting the investment they deserve, thanks to companies like Collins Aerospace.
“Because of our programming and support, our girls are able to become stronger, smarter, and bolder workforce leaders.”
The Invest in a Girl campaign encourages healthy, active lifestyles, and instills skills and behaviors that lead to productive, independent, and fulfilling lives.
Tom von Eschenbach, associate director, Military Avionics & Helicopters for Collins Aerospace, said the gender disparity in STEM fields is widely known.
“By partnering with leading nonprofit partners like Girls Inc., we are working to open doors for more young women to enter STEM careers and unlock their power and potential,” he said.
Nearly 90% of Girls Inc. participants live in families earning less than $30,000 a year. Unlike other after-school programs, Girls Inc. provides research-based programming, a pro-girl environment, and long-lasting mentoring relationships.
Collins Aerospace is a subsidiary of Raytheon Technologies.
