HAZEL GREEN — The Hazel Green High School girls basketball team may have to add space to its trophy room.
And, in winning their sixth-straight AHSAA state championship, the Lady Trojans also made history.
No AHSAA basketball program – boys or girls – had won six straight state championships. That is, until last Saturday.
The Lady Trojans, coached by Tim Miller, beat Huffman 53-40 to win the Class 6A championship.
Hazel Green finished the season 36-1. They also had a state-record 87-game winning streak that ended earlier in the season.
Miller credited the players and their parents for the program’s success.
“It’s a tribute to the girls over the years and the parents over the years,” he said.
He also touched on other factors that have played roles in the team’s consistent success over the past few years.
“The players know what the expectations are,” Miller said. “We have an expectation and a culture.
“We’ve played a schedule that challenges them.”
Miller said he was appreciative of the title and the season calling it a “nice run and a nice ride.”
The schedule for next year, according to Miller, will involve traveling around the country playing against some of the nation’s best high school teams.
In preparation for a seventh-straight crown?
“Winning championships, this never gets old,” Miller said.
