HUNTSVILLE — In this election year, public offices are not the only things on the ballot.
People can choose their favorite canine candidates starting Wednesday in the Huntsville Animal Services’ “Elect to Adopt” campaign.
The agency and Mayor Tommy Battle are launching the program to help animals find forever loving homes in the face of severe overcrowding.
The campaign begins Wednesday during a 10 a.m. kickoff event at the shelter, it was announced.
Battle and interim Animal Services Director Virgie Graham will be joined by some of the animals awaiting adoption.
“You’re going to hear a lot about making choices this year, all the way up through Nov. 5,” Graham said. “That’s why we’re asking residents to elect to adopt, not shop, and give loving homes to these great animals.”
The “Elect to Adopt” campaign is part of the larger nationwide “Clear the Shelters” initiative, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year.
This month, Animal Services is waiving adoption fees on most adult pets to help reduce the number of animals in the shelter and find them loving owners.
