Huntsville City Classic starts … but is delayed … today

HUNTSVILLE – Before you jump from Christmas to New Year’s celebrations, take a shot this week at the 40th annual Huntsville City Classic at Huntsville High School starting today.

The three-day City Classic has become a Huntsville and North Alabama holiday tradition.

Sixteen of the top high school boy’s basketball teams in the state are competing this week with the first round opening today. However, games originally scheduled for 9 a.m. and 10:30 have been delayed until noon due to possible hazardous road conditions today.

The quarterfinals and semifinals are Wednesday.

The Huntsville City Classic Championship concludes Thursday with the final two teams playing at 7 p.m.

The tournament has always been a predictor of teams to watch heading into postseason tournament play. In the past, the tournament has featured players who have gone on to play college and professional basketball.

All games are played at Huntsville High School with tournaments occurring in both the main gym and auxiliary gym.

Today Noon-9 p.m. (delayed)

Noon (rescheduled): Austin vs. Jacksonville
Noon: Huntsville vs. Madison Academy
1:30 p.m. (rescheduled): Columbia vs. Westminster Christian
1:30 p.m.: Buckhorn vs. Sparkman
3 p.m.: Hazel Green vs. Baker
4:30 p.m.: Lee vs. Oxford
6 p.m.: Mae Jemison vs. Haleyville
7:30 p.m.: Bob Jones vs. Mountain Brook

Games scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday will continue as previously scheduled.

High school girls teams are also playing during the tournament. Their championship is Friday.
