BIRMINGHAM – Huntsville native Gabi Nicastro is among the top female collegiate golfers in the nation.
A sophomore at Samford University, Nicastro has been named to the watch list for the ANNIKA Award, presented by Stifel and announced by the Haskins Foundation, which is given to the top female Division I golfer in the nation.
And local golf fans can watch Nicastro and her Bulldogs teammates today and Tuesday at the Huntsville.org Intercollegiate at Hampton Cove. To follow the tournament online, click on the following link: LIVE SCORING.
The winner of the ANNIKA award is voted on by players, coaches and members of the college golf media. Named for Annika Sorenstam, the award was created in partnership with the Haskins Foundation to acknowledge the top female golfer and to match the Haskins Award presented by Stifel, which acknowledges the top male Division I collegiate golfer.
Nicastro, a graduate of Huntsville High School, is one of just two players on the 20-player list not from a Power 5 school.
“I’m so proud of Gabi and her accomplishments,” Samford head coach Joe Davidson said. “Not only is she an outstanding golfer and student, she’s an even better person. Her faith, along with her overall commitment to excellence explains her success.”
In her freshman season, Nicastro earned two tournament wins and was named the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year after leading the team to a second-place finish in the SoCon Championship, the highest finish in program history. She then earned a spot in the NCAA Auburn Regional.
After the season, she won the 92nd Alabama Women’s State Amateur Championship, which qualified her for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship.
In her sophomore season, Nicastro has picked up right where she left off. In the fall, she earned three individual tournament championships.
