During the closure, a new HVAC and humidity regulation system was installed. The system is critical to maintaining the industry-standard environmental conditions required to host exhibitions from galleries and museums around the world.

“We are incredibly grateful to Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle and Huntsville City Council members, who support the investment in preserving the museum’s collection,” said HMA Executive Director Christopher Madkour. “The upgraded HVAC system will allow us to continue bringing high-quality exhibits to the North Alabama community.

“We already have several compelling shows lined up for 2025 and 2026, including the photography exhibit “Days of Punk – Photographs by Michael Grecco,” which opens Oct. 17.”

During the closure, museum staff also redesigned the layout of the galleries. Chief Curator Natalie Mault Mead led the project which better highlights the museum’s permanent collection and enhances the presentation of rotating traveling exhibitions.

“Our aim was to create a space that feels both welcoming and thought-provoking,” Mead said. “We approached the reinstallation with fresh eyes, considering not just what we show, but how and why.

“Whether you’re visiting for the first time or the 100th, we want the experience to spark new connections and invite deeper engagement with the art.”
