Huntsville offers summer program guide

HUNTSVILLE – Fun in the sun. A cool place to chill out. A new experience to enjoy.

With today being the unofficial first day of summer, Huntsville Parks & Recreation can help fill the days and hours with its summer’s program guide.

Parks & Recreation Director James Gossett said the department’s goal is to provide citizens all the resources needed to make it a fun and active summer.

“Whether that’s finding your new favorite park, taking advantage of our youth programs or trying a new exercise class, the possibilities are endless,” he said.

The guide is filled with 100-plus free activities, workshops, special events, programs and classes.

Want to meet a fitness goal? The city’s recreation and community centers provide everything from Zumba classes to a Couch to 5K program.

Feeling adventurous? Try a group mountain bike ride, with options for beginners and intermediate-level riders.

There’s even more outdoor fun with the Adventure Guide program, which helps fathers connect with their children through nature.

For those who love to create, Huntsville Parks & Recreation hosts art classes and embroidery workshops, even a parent-child woodworking clinic. Individuals with disabilities can enjoy free art classes, dance fitness, water aerobics and soccer lessons, as well as the “Exploring Huntsville” specialty camp for ages 6 and up.

The summer program guide also breaks down traditional and nontraditional athletic offerings. There are pickup games and pickleball clinics, kickball and cornhole, boxing and badminton, along with volleyball, soccer, golf, futsal and table tennis.

Continued learning is available through classes such as Girl Code, a free computer science program for girls ages 10-13, and GOAL, an adult learning program offered in partnership with Drake State Community & Technical College and Calhoun Community College.

This summer will bring a host of special events, especially during Parks & Recreation Month in July. Other events include the youth fishing rodeo, a festival celebrating dads, and Fitness in the Park.
