HUNTSVILLE – The city of Huntsville and Huntsville Transit will honor the legacy of civil rights icon Rosa Parks by offering free rides on all fixed transit routes Monday to commemorate Rosa Parks Day.

This initiative marks the 69th anniversary of Parks’ act of peaceful defiance on Dec. 1, 1955, when she refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a Montgomery bus. Her bravery ignited the Montgomery Bus Boycott and became a cornerstone of the Civil Rights Movement.

“Rosa Parks’ courage and determination launched a movement that forever changed our nation,” Mayor Tommy Battle said. ” I encourage everyone in Huntsville to take advantage of the free rides offered by Huntsville Transit on Rosa Parks Day. This is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the past while also embracing the accessibility and opportunities of the present.”
