LOS ANGELES — Nick Dunlap of Huntsville has shown himself to be one of the most promising young golfers in the country. No more was that on display than during his win last weekend at the men’s U.S. Amateur Championship in California.
The University of Alabama sophomore’s home course, the Canebrake Club in Athens, has started to become known for producing top level national talent such as Dunlap.
Last month, Ardmore native Lee Hodges, who also golfs at Canebrake, won the PGA’s 3M Open.
Dunlap said his win was the product of hard work and practice.
“I’ve worked my entire life for this. It’s the hours and hours that nobody sees to try to get to this point and even have a chance to win this trophy,” he said. “It’s unbelievable; can’t put it into words.”
With the win, Dunlap joins golfing great Tiger Woods as the only two golfers to win both the U.S. Junior Amateur and U.S. Amateur Championship.
“Well, I think it’s only a third of what Tiger’s actually done,” he said. “But just to be in the same conversation as Tiger is a dream come true and something that I’ve worked my entire life for.”
Dunlap and former Alabama golfer Jerry Pate are now the only two Crimson Tide golfers to win the championship.
With the win, Dunlap has secured his spot in the 2024 Masters. U.S. Open, and The Open Championship.
