Ivey announces grant to Rainsville Police Department for radio system upgrade

RAINSVILLE – When it comes to emergencies, they know no boundaries, lines or time.
To help help the Rainsville Police Department to more quickly respond to emergencies and seamlessly communicate with other area first responders, Gov. Kay Ivey awarded a $100,000 grant to the department to upgrade its radio communications system.
According to the governor’s office, the department will convert to a P25 digital radio system. P25, or Project 25, is a set of standards for radio manufacturers that ensures users can communicate with each other using different brands of equipment.
“P25 radio systems represent the state of the art for public safety and are widely used by emergency responders throughout Alabama,” Ivey said. “I commend Rainsville leaders for recognizing the importance of improved emergency communications when it comes to keeping residents safe.”
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant with funds made available by the U.S. Department of Justice.
“Agencies around the country have been upgrading to P25 radio systems, but smaller cities often struggle to find the necessary funds to make the change,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “ADECA is pleased to join Gov. Ivey in support of this effort to strengthen public safety in Rainsville and surrounding areas.”
ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, victim programs, economic development, water resource management, energy conservation and recreation.
