Lions look to continue historic season in ASUN quarterfinals tonight

FLORENCE – March has arrived. And the stage is set.

And it will be electric inside UNA’s CB&S Bank Arena tonight as the University of North Alabama men’s basketball team begins postseason play against No. 7 Austin Peay in the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship Quarterfinal. Tipoff is schedule for 6 p.m.

The Govs defeated No. 8 North Florida, 90-69, Sunday, advancing to play the No. 2 seed Lions.

Tonight will be UNA’s first time hosting a postseason game for the NCAA Division ASUN Conference. The last postseason game hosted by UNA came in 2017, in the first round of the Gulf South Conference tournament when the Lions were NCAA Division II.

The game will air on ESPN+ with “Voice of the Lions” Benjamin Ray, Matt Daniels and Chase Glover on the call. The local radio broadcast will be called by Bryan Neece on 98.3 and 103.5 FM at 5:40 p.m.

As March Madness takes over the basketball world, the ASUN will be one of the first conferences to crown its automatic bid to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, as the winner will be decided Sunday. UNA looks to win its first ASUN tournament championship and appear in its first championship final since 2021.

UNA’s 2-seed marks its highest seeding of the Division I era. Since 1979, the team with the 2-seed has won the ASUN tournament 13 times. The top seed has won 17 times and the third seed nine times. The lowest seed to win was Florida International University as a No. 8 seed in 1995.

The winner of this matchup will head to the ASUN Championship semifinals Thursday. The championship game is Sunday at 1 p.m. and will be nationally televised on the ESPN family of networks.
