Madison Police Department officers and Madison Fire & Rescue personnel participated in a surprise active shooter exercise this month designed to test how first responders coordinate during a mass casualty incident.
The unannounced drill, held July 17, evaluated incident command structure, emergency response and communication during a simulated active shooter event.
According to the Madison Police Department, officers who were not already responding to calls were directed to the Madison Public Safety Training Center, where they surrendered their duty weapons and were issued firearms capable of firing paint rounds for the exercise.
Responders were not told they were participating in a drill before receiving a dispatch reporting an active shooter at Journey Middle School.
To create a realistic scenario, organizers recruited more than 30 role players from the drama department at Calhoun Community College. Officers from the Huntsville Police Department and Athens Police Department portrayed the shooters.
Upon arriving at the school, responding officers and firefighters were intentionally provided with limited information to mirror the uncertainty common in real emergency situations.
Police worked to locate and neutralize two simulated shooters positioned in different areas of the building while firefighters and law enforcement coordinated to identify casualties, provide emergency care and prepare injured victims for transport.
Officials said the exercise focused on evaluating how agencies organize and operate under the pressure of a rapidly evolving incident.
Following the drill, all participants provided feedback that will be used to strengthen future training, improve communication and refine emergency response protocols.
“Time is of the essence in these emergency situations, and by working with maximum efficiency and a fixed plan, the departments will be equipped for an event that ideally never occurs,” the department said.
The city of Madison also thanked the Huntsville Police Department and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office for handling routine calls for service while local personnel participated in the exercise.
