MONTGOMERY — The Board of Directors for Manufacture Alabama has announced a shift in leadership and elected its next chairperson.
Karen Johnston, the regional director for government affairs at Toyota North America, will take over the position effective Wednesday.
“I’m honored to step into the role of chair and build on the progress we’ve made under Paul’s leadership,” said Johnston. “Manufacture Alabama plays a vital role in creating a supportive environment for Alabama’s manufacturers. I’m committed to working closely with the Manufacture Alabama team, members, and partners to champion the policies and initiatives that help our industry thrive.”
Johnston brings a significant amount of experience in government affairs, corporate communications, and human resources after working for the auto manufacturing giant in a variety of positions for over two decades. She is replacing Chairman Paul Vercher, who served in the role since 2021. Vercher will remain on the board.
“Karen’s extensive experience and proven leadership at Toyota make her an outstanding choice for this position,” said Jon Barganier, president of Manufacture Alabama. “Our team looks forward to working closely with Karen as we continue to advance the interests of Alabama’s manufacturers.”
Barganier thanked Vercher for his “exceptional leadership” as chairman.
“During his tenure, Manufacture Alabama has flourished and his guidance has played a crucial role in moving our mission forward,” Barganier said. “His unwavering commitment to the organization and to Alabama’s manufacturing community will have a lasting impact.
“We are fortunate that Paul will remain an active member on our board.”
Vercher called it an honor to have served as chairman and expressed his confidence in Johnston’s ability to lead the board.
“I’m incredibly proud of everything we’ve accomplished together,” he said. “Karen’s deep industry insight and her talent for building strong connections will lead this organization to new heights.
“I’m excited to support her and the Board as we continue working to strengthen Alabama’s manufacturing community.”
Johnston will hold the position for a two-year term.
