More than just fireworks, Athens launches Red, White, & Boom Festival

ATHENS – This isn’t your parents’ Red, White & Boom.

This year, the long-time Athens Fourth of July celebration has expanded.

The Red, White, & Boom Festival is exploding onto the scene.

Taking the tradition to the next level, Athens-Limestone County Tourism and its city and county partners have grown the fireworks show to include a full night of fun for the whole family.

Presented at the Athens Sportsplex by Ramona J’s restaurant, the festival opens at 5 p.m. and features a vendor fair, food truck favorites, family-friendly activities, and the inaugural Battle of the Bands. Rising bands will perform short sets to compete for the $250 grand prize, voted on by judges and the crowd.

A fireworks spectacular at 9 p.m. will highlight the night, followed by the Battle of the Bands winner performing a short concert.

Regarding traffic, Athens Police Chief Anthony Pressnell said the east side of U.S. 31 will continue to travel northbound and the west side will continue to travel southbound as normal. Vehicles temporarily will not be able to travel from U.S. 31 to Highway 251 until it is reopened once the parking lot next to the stadium is empty.

“Although the possession and use of fireworks are still prohibited within Athens City Limits, the public will be allowed to utilize sparklers and other small pyrotechnics,” said Pressnell.
