A new public kayak and canoe launch is now open at Coosa Landing, marking an expansion of recreational access along Neely Henry Lake.
Community members, local leaders and paddling enthusiasts gathered Monday to celebrate the opening of the assisted launch, a project led by the Neely Henry Lake Association and funded through the Alabama Scenic River Trail 2025 Waterway Enhancement Program.
Organizers said the launch is one of only a few assisted public access points for non-motorized watercraft on the lake, designed to make it easier for users to enter and exit the water safely.
“We also added signage with a QR code,” said Dave Tumlin, president of the Neely Henry Lake Association. “This links directly to a survey where people can tell us about their experience using the launch.”
The addition builds on the existing footprint at Coosa Landing, which includes a walking path, restaurants and event space, and is expected to support growing interest in paddling and outdoor recreation in the area.
Officials said the project responds to increasing demand for accessible launch points as more residents and visitors explore the region’s waterways.
State and local leaders attending the event included State Rep. Mark Gidley (R-Hokes Bluff), State Rep. Craig Lipscomb (R-Gadsden) and State Sen. Andrew Jones (R-Centre), along with representatives from the city of Gadsden.
The Alabama Scenic River Trail, the state’s official paddling resource, works with communities to promote recreation, economic development and stewardship of Alabama’s waterways.
