Open call for aspiring local playwrights

Theatre Huntsville and Evil Cheez Productions is presenting the 2022 Rocket City Playwrights’ Series, a program that supports the creation of new works by local writers.

Now in its sixth year of competition, the annual playwright’s series provides an opportunity for unknown local playwrights who are struggling to get their first play on stage to get their work noticed.

Theatre Huntsville believes locally written productions are a unique cultural opportunity that provides a direct lens into the identity of our local community and the surrounding communities of North Alabama, and they along with Evil Cheez Productions are committed to investing in and supporting local storytellers and theatre artists interested in the creation of new live works.

The competition consists of five 10-minute plays, selected and presented to the public in a readers’ theatre format by members of the two theatre groups. Audiences vote on their top three, which are awarded cash prizes.

Applicants must be at least 14 years old and reside in North Alabama. Works must be submitted in a pdf or Word document format and should be no longer than 10 minutes in length.

No musicals or children’s theatre will be considered, and works should, preferably, not contain profanity.

To submit your play to the 2022 Rocket City Playwrights’ Series competition, email it to [email protected] by midnight, May 1. Finalists will be announced on June 7, and performances will be held on August 20.
