HUNTSVILLE — With less than four weeks before the home opener, Huntsville City Football Club released an update on Joe Davis Stadium – and it’s a real kick in the grass.

The MLS NEXT Pro club is on a bye week after five matches in its 7-match season-opening road trip. HCFC (0W-3L-2D, 2SOW) returns to action May 5 at Columbus Crew 2 and then visits Chicago Fire 2 on May 12.

The home opener is May 19 with a 7 p.m. kickoff when Charlotte Crown Legacy visits.

Joe Davis Stadium, aka “The Joe,” is in the final stages of its transformation from a broken down baseball stadium to a multisport venue ready for football, soccer, lacrosse, field hockey and ultimate frisbee.

The $28.8 million project includes an artificial turf field, landscaping around the stadium, replacing seats, creating bleacher seating on the stadium’s east side, renovating the press box/skybox, and installing lighting and a massive scoreboard in the southeast corner.

There are 5,142 “fixed seats” and another 900 “non-fixed” seats, as in suites, etc. The former minor league ballpark seated 10,400 fans. The northwest corner of the stadium is a designated “Supporter Section” with the drum-beating, chanting HCFC supporters cheering on the home club.
