HUNTSVILLE — The mayor will be putting down some roots, literally, next month in Huntsville.
It will be Mayor’s Tree Planting Day at Brahan Spring Park and Mayor Tommy Battle and Huntsville’s Green Team are hosting Nov. 1 from 9 a.m. to noon.
The annual planting event brings together community volunteers who want to help grow Huntsville’s tree canopy – one of the city’s most important natural resources.
Green Team will prepare hundreds of tree planting sites and provide all the tools and supplies needed. Volunteers may drop in at any time, and all ages are welcome.
Battle, City Arborist Marc Byers and Green Team will share planting tips and talk about how trees contribute more than beauty to our community.
“As our city grows, it’s more important than ever to grow our green spaces,” Battle said. “Each tree we plant is a growing investment in our quality of life, and they’re one of the most powerful tools for building sustainable, livable cities.”
Trees make neighborhoods more livable while cleaning the air, reducing energy costs and providing shade to homes, parks and streets. In urban areas like Huntsville, planting trees helps balance growth with green space and strengthens the community’s connection to nature.
“Planting in the fall sets trees up for success,” said Brian Walker, director of Landscape Management. “When you plant in cooler weather, roots can grow steadily without the stress of summer heat. By planting now, the community is giving these trees the best possible start for long-term health and growth.”
Since the first Mayor’s Tree Planting Day in 2014, the community has come together to plant nearly 2,800 trees at John Hunt Park and Brahan Spring Park. This year, the public tree planting event will add several hundred more trees.
Green Team’s planting effort supports the city’s broader goals for sustainability and environmental stewardship. In addition to tree planting, Green Team coordinates litter cleanup, recycling education and beautification projects throughout Huntsville.
Green Team will also give away seedling trees while supplies last, thanks to the support of the Alabama Urban Forestry Association, the Arbor Day Foundation and International Paper.
For those who can’t make the Mayor’s Tree Planting Day but still want to help, Green Team will host a public tree planting event Nov. 8, from 10 a.m. to noon at Cavalry Hill Community Center, 2900 Fairbanks St. NW. Hundreds of trees will be planted and all supplies will be provided.
