Madison City Schools officials warned students and parents Sunday night that participation in a rumored student walkout could result in disciplinary action, citing safety concerns and disruptions to instruction.
In a letter sent to families, Bob Jones High School Principal Sylvia Lambert said the district had become aware through social media of a possible student walkout planned for Monday related to immigration and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement issues.
“The safety and well-being of our students is always our top priority,” Lambert wrote. “Madison City Schools respects all students’ rights to express themselves under the First Amendment; however, a student walkout during the school day is not permitted.”
According to the letter, district leadership reviewed the situation and determined that leaving class or campus without authorization would disrupt instruction and could create unsafe conditions for students and staff.
School officials also raised concerns that a walkout could escalate into a disruptive or unsafe interaction among students. A similar letter was also sent to the parents and students of James Clemens High School.
Lambert warned that students who participate in a walkout may face disciplinary consequences under the district’s Student Code of Conduct. The letter also noted that participation could prompt a review of a student’s continuation in Patriot Prep, a program that provides structured time during the school day.
While discouraging a walkout, school officials emphasized they are not seeking to silence students. Lambert encouraged students who want to express concerns or advocate for change to do so through “appropriate and constructive channels” that do not disrupt the instructional environment.
“We are committed to listening to students and helping them learn how to engage responsibly and respectfully,” Lambert wrote, adding that she is available to speak with students who want to discuss the issue.
Parents were asked to speak with their children about the situation and to assist school leaders in maintaining a safe, orderly, and supportive learning environment.
