Seeing red: Morgan County Decatur Farmers Market hosting inaugural Tomato Festival

DECATUR – You say “to-MAY-to” and I say “to-MAH-to.”

But, no matter how you pronounce it, be sure to head to the Morgan County Decatur Farmers Market for the inaugural Tomato Festival.

In partnership with Decatur Morgan County Tourism, Saturday morning’s festival will feature free tomato samples, face painting, and music from Drew Clemons.

The event is 8 a.m. to noon at the newly renovated Farmer’s Market at 211 1st Avenue SE. The market originally opened in 1937, but just recently underwent a $3 million renovation project that took two years to complete.

It reopened April 12 and this is the first major event that has taken place since completion.

Alabama-grown tomatoes are more than a garden staple – they’re the most popular crop in gardens – they are a big deal for local farmers and the economy.
