FLORENCE — Shoals Mom Prom, the largest annual fundraiser benefiting Safer Birth in Bama, returns next week with its signature blend of glamor, heart, and purpose.
Now a proud WC Handy Festival Partnered Event, the July 18 event aims to raise $75,000 to improve birth care and maternal mental health services in the Shoals region and across Alabama.
The evening features a ticketed prom-night experience inside Singing River LIVE, where guests will enjoy music, dancing, and celebration. Outside, a free block party open to the public will feature food trucks, live entertainment, and opportunities to support the cause.
Funds raised will support the following critical maternal health care initiatives:
- North Alabama Medical Center: $3,000 Purchase of a second nitrous oxide machine to expand pain relief options for laboring patients
- Helen Keller Hospital: $3,000 Acquisition of wireless waterproof fetal monitors
- Shoals Midwifery Care Clinic (500 East Tennessee St., Ste. 2, Florence): Launch support with a $3,000 startup grant for Certified Professional Midwives expanding access to prenatal, home birth and postpartum care and services right here in the Shoals and surrounding areas. We welcome and thank midwifery team members Regina Woodley, Tiffany Martin, Tracie Stone, and Glenni Lorick of the MOM Foundation of Huntsville who are piloting this effort in our area.
- Project Luna: Operational funding for local maternal mental health services in partnership with Women and Children’s Counseling
- Creation of continuing education courses for medical, midwifery, and nursing professionals.
“Our mission to bridge the gap between traditional wisdom and modern medicine is statewide, but change starts right here in our own community,” said Jessica Thompson, president and co-founder of Safer Birth in Bama. “By investing in local hospitals, clinics, and care providers, we’re building a model of care we hope to see replicated in every county across Alabama.”
Attendees can earn extra Prom Queen entries by bringing donation items for Shoals Women’s Clinic, which provides pregnancy testing, support, and mobile care to women in need. Even block party guests can participate — bring a donation and be entered to win a grand prize at the outdoor event.
“We hope to stuff the stage inside and out to help Shoals Women’s Clinic as they serve local moms in their pregnancy resource center,” said Haley Crowell, vice president of Safer Birth in Bama.
Needed donation items include:
- Diapers (newborn & size 1)
- Baby wipes
- Pregnancy tests
- New baby bottles and pacifiers
- Maternity pads and postpartum care kits
