Sunday’s finale is Decision Day for Huntsville City FC

HUNTSVILLE — After six months and 27 games, the final game of Huntsville City FC’s inaugural season is aptly called Decision Day.

The first-year club has dropped its last two matches but HCFC still has a chance to qualify for the MLS NEXT Pro playoffs.

Huntsville fell 2-1 last Sunday at Philadelphia Union II and hosts Chicago Fire II in the final regular season match Sunday. Kickoff is 1 p.m. at the Wicks Family Field at Joe Davis Stadium. Tickets can be purchased here.

For HCFC to reach the playoffs, they’re going to need help.

Huntsville is in 9th place in the MLS NEXT Pro Eastern Conference standings with the top seven teams qualifying for the postseason. HCFC has 37 points, trailing seventh-place Union II with 39 points and eighth-place NYCFC II at 38 points. The Fire II are in sixth place with 41 points.

Union II visits fourth-place New York Red Bull II and NYCFC II is at 13th-place Inter Miami II for their Decision Day matches Sunday. Huntsville can clinch a playoff berth with a regulation win, a regulation loss by Philadelphia Union II, and a regulation or shootout loss by New York City FC II.

“Hopefully we can get the win and do what we can from our end,” said head coach Jack Collison after last Sunday’s match. “On the flip side, … the New York Red Bulls and Miami, we hope they’ll help us out a bit.

“First and foremost, we want to do our best and put on a good performance.”

Sunday is also Fan Appreciation Day at The Joe and the first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a team photo. Also hats, scarves, and the home kit will be 25% off at the team store. After the game, fans will get a chance to get autographs from the players.

“We want to put on a show … for the fans,” said Collison. “They’ve been incredibly supportive and behind us all year.”
