‘The Art of Decatur Theatre: Big Blue World’ exhibit opens at Alabama Center for the Arts

DECATUR – To say that Drew Sybert has a hand in the newest exhibit at the Alabama Center for the Arts is, well, true.

The exhibit, “The Art of Decatur Theatre: Big Blue World,” features DreamWeavers Theatre and captivating puppets designed by Sybert.

“The Art of Decatur Theatre: Big Blue World” will showcase more than a dozen custom-built puppets (including Nemo, Marlin, Dory and all of their friends) from a previous production of “Finding Nemo Jr.”, as well as some of the crew’s favorite colorful, one-of-a-kind costumes created for the cast. DreamWeavers will also share photography and set pieces from the show.

An artist’s reception with Sybert and the DreamWeavers Board is set for July 26 from 4-5:30 p.m. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.

Sybert, who lives in North Alabama, is a former performer for the Walt Disney Co. He earned his associate of science in graphic design degree from Full Sail University in 2022, and has an extensive background in various mediums within the performing arts community.

DreamWeavers Theatre seeks to help children foster a love for theater by providing experiences for the community to create, perform, and enjoy live theatre. They perform at the Princess Theatre in Decatur.

“The Art of Decatur Theatre: Big Blue World” will close Aug. 28. The Alabama Center for the Arts is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to noon Fridays.

The Alabama Center for the Arts is the region’s premier art center and degree program through a collaborative academic effort between Athens State University and Calhoun Community College.
