HUNTSVILLE — While a lot of Huntsville’s interests are Washington-related, Sen. Tommy Tuberville said it’s the local politicians “who get things done.”
Tuberville (R-Auburn) made his comments Monday at the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce’s Washington Update.
In his remarks, Tuberville urged the citizens of Huntsville and North Alabama to get involved in local municipal government. He also stressed the need to thoroughly research any local candidate before voting.
“We’ve got people who want this country to get better,” said Tuberville. “A lot of them are from this area. You’ve got a great group of people in the Senate, in the House.
“People ask me about politics, and I said you know, the most important politicians are your school board, your city commissioners, and your county commissioners. Those are the people who get things done in your area, so be very particular about who you vote for. Vet them very well because they’re in your future in this area.”
He assured those in attendance that federal lawmakers are looking out for North Alabama, but again emphasized the importance of municipal government.
“We’re going to get money. (U.S. Sen.) Katie Britt and I will do everything we can. (U.S. Rep.) Dale Strong,” Tuberville said. “He’ll do everything in this area to help fund things. But again, when it comes to city government, like the mayor, like the county commissioner here, that is what’s important.”
Tuberville issued a call to action to the audience.
“It wouldn’t hurt if some of you that think, well, I don’t want to get in it, get into some lower type of politics where you can help and give back,” he said. “Give back what’s given so much to you.”
