UNA men’s tennis team caps perfect home season with ASUN title

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama men’s tennis team ended the regular season in style with a 6-1 rout over the University of North Florida, resulting in the Lions’ first outright ASUN title.

The Lions’ magical season continued at the UNA Tennis Courts in front of a rollicking Senior Day crowd. North Alabama led a strong effort in the final home dual, starting fast in doubles before taking five of the six singles flights.

The UNA victory topped off a perfect 9-0 record in home duals. UNA also ran through ASUN competition with an 8-0 record in conference play.

The Lions clinched the top seed and a first-round bye for the 2025 ASUN Men’s Tennis Championship this week in Jacksonville, Fla.

North Alabama opens its tournament play Friday at 8 a.m. against the winner of No. 4 Lipscomb and No. 5 North Florida in the semifinal round.

Against North Florida, all six Lions players were victorious.

Sophomores Alberto Altur and Izan Orgiles led the day with a singles and doubles win, with freshman Satoru Nakajima also winning his two matches on the day. Nakajima teamed with junior Lachlan Brain for a doubles victory before taking the sixth flight in straight sets. Altur and Orgiles teamed up for their doubles win before claiming respective singles victories.

Senior Nazar Fedoryshyn went out strong with a singles victory from court five, and sophomore Birtan Duran rounded out the day with a straight-sets singles triumph.

North Florida struck first with a top-flight win in singles play, but it was all North Alabama the rest of the way.
