The University of North Alabama will roll out the red carpet this week as the 29th George Lindsey UNA Film Festival begins Thursday, March 5, in downtown Florence.
The two-day event begins at 6 p.m. at the UNA School of the Arts Galley on Tombigbee Street. Organizers say the festival remains the longest-running film festival in Alabama.
Throughout the weekend, screenings, live performances and community events will take place across multiple venues. Notably, all events are free and open to the public.
“We take great pride in showcasing Alabama film alongside the most exciting new works from independent filmmakers across the country,” said Dr. Nora Stone, assistant professor of film production and the festival’s lead programmer. Stone said audiences will have the chance to meet directors and actors after many of the screenings.
Earlier Thursday, the festival will welcome 40 students from Deshler High School for a screening and workshop. Later in the day, short films by Alabama filmmakers will follow.
To close opening night, live music from Bonnie Watson and Justin Arnold will take the stage. Following the performances, two featured films will screen at the Mane Room.
Originally co-founded by UNA alumnus George Lindsey — a Fairfield native best known for playing Goober Pyle on “The Andy Griffith Show” — the festival has become a longstanding tradition in Florence. Today, the event continues to highlight student and alumni art in the region.
On Friday, UNA Student Films will screen at 10 a.m., and alumni films will follow at noon.
One anticipated premiere is “When the Night Falls,” showing Thursday at 10:30 p.m. The film stars UNA alumnus Austin Parsons alongside Shoals native Phoebe Jones.
“I have a huge appreciation for my time at UNA and would not be the artist I am without the influence of its professors and colleagues,” Jones said. She added that she looks forward to sharing the film with friends and family in Florence.
