As July turns to August, North Alabama’s event calendar is showing no signs of slowing down. The first weekend of the month brings a mix of outdoor concerts, community festivals and family-friendly activities, giving residents and visitors plenty of ways to make the most of the season. Whether you’re settling in for Shakespeare under the stars, spending an evening in downtown Athens or enjoying live music with a mountaintop view, there’s something happening across the region. Here’s a look at a few events taking place this week.
Shakespeare in the Garden – Huntsville
August 1st
Shakespeare’s timeless comedies are returning to the Huntsville Botanical Garden for another season of outdoor performances under the stars. Presented by UAH’s Huntsville Shakes, this year’s productions feature Much Ado About Nothing and The Taming of the Shrew on select Friday and Saturday evenings through Aug. 8. Guests can enjoy the performances in the garden’s amphitheater, with food, drinks and concessions available on-site. Shows begin at 7:30 p.m., and attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or seat cushions for the concrete seating.
Fridays After Five – Athens
July 31st
Downtown Athens will come alive with music, food and family-friendly fun as Fridays After Five returns July 31. Held on the east side of the Limestone County Courthouse, the free community event features a live performance by the Velcro Pygmies, along with food trucks, a kids zone, local vendors and extended shopping and dining hours at downtown businesses. Bring a lawn chair, grab dinner from a local food truck and enjoy an evening of live entertainment in the heart of Athens.
City Lights & Stars Concert Series – Huntsville
July 31st
Take in live music with one of the best views in Huntsville as Burritt on the Mountain’s City Lights & Stars Concert Series continues July 31 with a performance by Mambo Gris Gris. Celebrating its 33rd season, the outdoor concert series invites guests to bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnic dinners while enjoying an evening of music overlooking the city. Food trucks and beverages will be available on-site, and gates open at 6 p.m. before the 7 p.m. concert.
Bluff Blast – Hokes Bluff
August 1st
Families looking for one last summer celebration before the school year begins can head to Hokes Bluff for Bluff Blast on Aug. 1. The free event at The Bluff Amphitheater features inflatable water slides, bounce houses, a foam party, face painting, live music by Scotty Sams, food vendors, raffles and performances by local cheer and tumble teams. The festivities run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., making it an easy stop for a day of family-friendly fun.
