Huntsville residents now have access to a continuous 14.7-mile greenway loop in South Huntsville following the completion of the newest section of the Tennessee River Greenway.

Mayor Tommy Battle joined city officials Wednesday for a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the completion of the 1.5-mile extension, which stretches from Redstone Road to Green Cove Road.

Construction on the project began in September 2025 and completes a continuous loop by connecting sections of the Aldridge Creek Greenway with access to the Tennessee River and Ditto Landing.

City leaders said the completed loop expands recreational opportunities while improving connectivity between parks, neighborhoods and other destinations in South Huntsville.

“Huntsville’s greenways are a valuable recreation asset to the Huntsville community,” Battle said. “Expanding our greenway network is an investment in the health, well-being and quality of life for everyone who visits or calls Huntsville home.”

Designed for walking, running and cycling, the greenway winds through natural landscapes while providing residents with an outdoor recreation option within the city.

District 3 Council Member Jennie Robinson said the completed loop has been a long-awaited project for South Huntsville residents.

“This is an exciting project for residents,” Robinson said. “As we all live our busy lives, it’s truly a luxury to have a robust network of quiet and peaceful greenways winding throughout the city. I know in south Huntsville, completing this loop is something everyone has been looking forward to.”

Parks & Recreation Director James Gossett said the expanded trail system is intended to serve users of all ages and abilities.

“Recreation is for everyone,” Gossett said. “Whether you enjoy a morning walk, a weekend bike ride, a daily run or simply spending time outdoors with family and friends, spaces like this provide opportunities for residents of all ages and abilities to connect with nature and one another.”

The completed project is part of Huntsville’s ongoing effort to expand its greenway network, providing residents with additional opportunities for outdoor recreation while linking major parks, waterways and community destinations across the city.
