HUNTSVILLE — To kick start an active and healthy lifestyle while exploring Madison County’s natural beauty, the Madison County Commission is inviting the public to the 100 Alabama Miles Challenge.
And, to get the challenge off on the right foot (or left), the People’s Patch Power Stroll is set for 9 a.m. Saturday at The People’s Patch Community Farm at 3701 Meridian Street, adjacent to the Alabama A&M campus.
“With rows of recently planted crops and newly established walking trails, The People’s Patch is the perfect place to enjoy nature while getting your steps in,” said Commissioner Violet Edwards. “Madison County is fortunate to have dozens of unique outdoor recreation destinations, and we hope our fields of flowers and produce patches will become one of them.”
The 100 Alabama Miles Challenge encourages Alabamians to get outside and walk, run, hike, bike, swim, paddle, ride, or roll with family and friends for 100 miles each year.
While people can participate at home, in their neighborhood, or at their favorite gym, the program encourages participants to get their miles in by visiting Alabama’s parks, nature preserves, and rivers.
The People Patch is a 25-acre community farm established in north Huntsville in 2024. It grows fresh vegetables for picking year-round for the surrounding neighborhoods and serves as a research site for students of Alabama A&M University.
“Our state has over 5,000 miles of trails that offer fantastic experiences for all Alabamians to have fun and be active,” said Brian Rushing, the program’s coordinator. “This program is an enjoyable way for people to set physical activity goals and make memories as they explore our beautiful state.”
There is no Power Stroll registration; however, challenge participants must register at 100alabamamiles.org The first 50 participants will receive a free program t-shirt. Everyone is invited.
