A new chapter: Snail on the Wall online bookstore making its mark with walls

HUNTSVILLE — In “The Mark on the Wall,” Virginia Woolf’s narrator was inspired to envision a world of thought, debate and dreams in a snail’s mark on the wall, and Lady Smith was inspired to start the bookstore Snail on the Wall

After six years of being Huntsville’s bookstore without a store — bringing books to the community through an online presence and community pop-up events — Snail on the Wall is looking forward to settling down and being able to welcome people in their door in the Five Points neighborhood.

Lady Smith and co-owner Christina Tabereaux are preparing to open their brick-and-mortar storefront at 816 Wellman Avenue with a grand opening, two-day celebration Sept. 20-21 full of giveaways, treats and an author event.

The Snail, as the women endearingly call the store, plans to have a regular schedule of nationally known and local authors. With one author event already under their belt, they will continue with the upcoming book signing with Anne Byrn, author of “Baking in the American South: 200 Recipes and Their Untold Stories.”

Author Heather Morris stops by for a Saturday storytime Oct. 12 to launch of her children’s book “Trunk Goes Thunk.” November brings Marybeth Wahlen, author of the upcoming novel “Every Moment Since,” who will be in conversation with Ariel Lawhon, author of “The Frozen River.”

The owners plan to continue engaging with the community, such as with Books and Brews and Boos at Campus 805 on Oct. 28. Readers there can find the nostalgia of school book fairs all grown up for book-loving adults.

There are more book-release parties on tap, too. Fans of Rebecca Yarros’s “The Empyrean” series, which includes “Fourth Wing” and “Iron Flames,” should keep an eye out for the midnight release party for “Onyx Storm” in early 2025.

The Snail will also remain involved with the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library, local schools, the Boys and Girls Club, and HudsonAlpha’s diversity book club, to name just a few.

For those who cannot make it in-store, Snail on the Wall has their own mail service book orders – Snail Mail. Unlike other subscriptions, the Snail offers personalized boxes for readers.

Snail on the Wall will continue to offer their holiday book bundles as well as literary accessories, including bookmarks, literary art, activity books, puzzles and more. Also, there’s Snail on the Wall merchandise created by local Green Pea Press.

Whatever kind of reader you are, join Snail on the Wall and open the pages onto a journey through life, through worlds and all the fun moments in between.
