HUNTSVILLE — There was some welcome news on the Alabama A&M campus Thursday.
Or, rather, some Welcome Center news.
AAMU President Daniel K. Wims joined members of the AAMU Board of Trustees, administrators, students, faculty, staff, alumni and community supporters for a ribbon-cutting at the university’s new Welcome Center.

Among the special guests and speakers was AAMU President Emeritus Dr. Andrew Hugine Jr., who worked to get the Welcome Center built.
Other speakers included Board of Trustees President Pro Tem Dr. Roderick Wayne Watts, Trustee John Hackett, Ron Poteat of Regions Bank, Madison County Commissioner Violet Edwards, Rob Van Peursem with Nola Van Peursem Architects, and AAMU alums Michael Nelson and Tony Hairston, who managed the building’s construction.
The $7.6 million Welcome Center at the corner of Chase Road and Meridian Street will house the university’s Office of Admissions and is a one-stop shop for student information.
It also has space for restaurants, with a Chick-fil-A already in place, and a Starbucks to open Aanext year.
