MONTGOMERY — A Huntsville hotel and a convenience store will be the site of electric vehicle charging stations, the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs announced.
They are among six locations that will share $2.26 million from state funds to increase the availability of the chargers on Alabama’s roads.
Five of the grants were awarded to a Texas-based company to install electric vehicle charging stations at hotels in several locations across Alabama and can be used by hotel guests and the general public. The other grant was awarded to a Georgia company to install EV chargers at a fueling station/convenience store in Huntsville.
According to ADECA, $350,700 was awarded to Universal EV to install two charging stations at the Hampton Inn, 328 Providence Main Street; and Silver Comet Energy received a $514,157 grant to install two electric vehicle charging stations at RaceTrac, 3725 Alabama Highway 53.
Funds for the grants were supplied through the Alabama Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Program. The program is funded through appropriations supplied by the Alabama Legislature.
It is intended to install charging stations in areas where people spend time such as hotels, shopping centers and tourist attractions and secondary road systems, and areas that might not qualify for federal funding.
“The installation of electric vehicle charging stations at places like hotels are investments that can attract customers and add to local economies,” said ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell. “ADECA is pleased to be administering these awards.”
